The Story of QR Codes
QR codes (Quick Response codes) were invented in 1994 by engineer Masahiro Hara at Denso Wave, a Japanese automotive components manufacturer. They were originally designed to track parts on Toyota assembly lines. Compared to traditional barcodes, they could hold far more data and be read at high speed from any angle.
For over a decade, QR codes stayed in factories. Then smartphones put a camera in everyone's pocket, and suddenly anyone could scan one. Today they are everywhere: restaurant menus, payment terminals, boarding passes, product packaging, event tickets, and digital business cards.
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated things further. Restaurants ditched physical menus, airlines went fully digital with boarding passes, and contactless payments became the norm. By the mid-2020s, QR codes were ubiquitous across virtually every industry.
